Adoption of Technology, Management Practices, and Production Systems by U.S. Beef Cow-Calf Producers AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Nehring, Richard F.; Qushim, Berdikul.
Using USDA’s Agricultural Resource Management Survey data, factors leading to the adoption of technology, management practices, and production systems by U.S. beef cow-calf producers are analyzed. Binary logit regression models are used to determine impacts of vertical integration; region of the U.S.; farm size, diversification, and tenure; and demographics on adoption decisions. Significant differences were found in adoption rates by region of the U.S., degree of vertical integration, and size of operation, suggesting the presence of economies of size and vertical economies of scope. Results also indicate high degrees of complementarity among technologies, management practices, and production systems.

Can Faculty Change Initial Impressions on Student Evaluations of Teaching? AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Dicks, Michael R.; Tilley, Daniel S..
Expectations of a course and instructor are formed prior to engagement in the course which affect learning. By understanding the factors that are involved in setting these expectations, instruction and student learning may be improved. This paper seeks to determine if student expectations set the basis for course and instructor appraisal and what factors affect these expectations or changes from expectations. Results indicate that while instructor appraisal does not change over the course of the semester, variables related to instructor appraisal do change. How worthwhile students view the course can also positively or negatively impact overall course appraisal.

Consumer Demand for a Ban on Antibiotic Drug Use in Pork Production AgEcon
Lusk, Jayson L.; Norwood, F. Bailey; Pruitt, J. Ross.
Consumer demand for a ban on subtherapeutic antibiotic use in pork production is measured using non-hypothetical choice experiments in a grocery store setting. Consumers are asked to choose between a regular pork chop plus a grocery coupon and an antibiotic-friendly pork chop without a coupon. Other consumers are asked to choose between a donation towards reducing antibiotic resistance and grocery coupons. These experiments reveal the private and public value consumers place on a ban, which is used with cost estimates to estimate the welfare impacts of a ban.

Impacts of U.S. Sugar Policy and the North American Free Trade Agreement in North American Sugar Containing Products AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Tilley, Daniel S..
Sugar is one of the most protected agricultural commodities in the United States and other countries around the world through the use of production allotments, preferential marketing agreements, and tariffs. These protectionist measures lead to increased input costs for manufacturers of candies and soft drinks. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has in part altered the nature of sugar trade throughout the North American continent. This paper presents a game theoretical Cournot model which illustrates how trade in sugar containing products and the location of sugar containing product manufacturers in North America is likely to be impacted by the combined effects of U.S. sugar policy and NAFTA. Current international agreements which affect...

Location Patterns of Confectionery Manufacturers in a Post NAFTA Environment AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Tilley, Daniel S..
Changes in international trade agreements while retaining protectionist sugar policies have led to the opportunity for confectionery manufacturers to relocate to take advantage of favorable international trade policies. Results suggest that NAFTA did not have a significant impact on location decisions of confectionery manufacturers in the U.S.
